Agios Nikolaos: A feast for the eyes

Agios Nikolaos is a place of exceptional natural beauty, and as the locals claim, the most charming part of Crete. Picturesque Agios Nikolaos is a feast of colours and natural wonders, and offers a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. Welcome to picturesque Agios Nikolaos!

Thanks to its arty yet lively atmosphere, the coastal town of Agios Nikolaos is perfect for complete relaxation in the sunshine. Highlight of the town is a tranquil blue and green lagoon, Lake Voulismeni, considered to be goddess Athena’s bathing spot. Above the lake, there is a park offering magnificent panoramic views over the deep body of water. Crossing the small bridge connecting the lake to the sea you’ll reach the rest of the town where a variety of shops and tavernas make a perfect stop for an aromatic afternoon coffee. There you’ll find silver and gold souvenirs, handmade trinkets and vibrant carpets as well as mouth-watering Cretan food products

The people who travel have always fascinated me: Tourists, nomads, jet setters, pilgrims and wanderers, coming and going to places, leaving their mark and taking with them indelible memories. The exchange of ideas and habits is bound to happen, no matter what the travel purposes are; the tourist has the possibility to make a difference to another person’s life and profoundly change himself at the same time. If we examine our life through the eyes of a tourist, we can allow ourselves to detach from the routine patterns that limit our self-expression, while the tourist returns to the familiar starting point after having a chance not only to discover a new place, but a new self as well.

If you are not in the mood for shopping, why not take a walk around the marina, gazing at the sparkling waters of Mirabello Gulf as the colours change during sunset. The islet of Agioi Pantes in the middle of the gulf also adds a scenic touch to the view. While it’s getting darker the bright lights of the anchored ships create a festive setting.

All this is before we even get to Agios Nikolaos’ beautiful beaches. It’s all long, golden sand and warm turquoise waters. The beaches are part of the life-force of Agios Nikolaos and some people are so dedicated to the blue sea, they’ll even take a refreshing dip in the chilly winter months.

At the end of the day why not indulge in one of the dramatic sunsets and its amazing hues. The atmosphere is painted in orange and red while you can feel the changes in the atmosphere. The night starts to grow, only to show that another day has passed. New dreams, aspirations and thoughts will appear the day after, when the bright yellow sun rises up again...
