Crete’s Climate, Agriculture and Cuisine

Crete is in the Mediterranean climate zone and the city of Rethymno has a warm, temperate weather system buffeted by the Mediterranean Sea. Winters are calm, and although there is some rain, snow is rare is limited to the mountains. Summers are warm, usually very hot and very dry.

Experts say that Crete has its own ‘microclimate’ which is perfect for growing olive trees, one of the most important ingredients in Greek cooking. As well as that, spices and other herbs such as oregano, basil, mint, thyme and rosemary are widely used, as are vegetables like eggplant and zucchini, and legumes of all types are easily grown in Crete in a great amount. That’s why many Cretans keep their own small farms, producing an incredible variety of cheeses, oils, fruits, grains, legumes, and vegetables. Most locals also know where to find wild herbs and greens that add an extra element to the cooking pot.

Because of this huge variety of natural foods, the island of Crete has the most distinct cuisine of all Greek islands. Crete is the best eating place in Greece; it is a real treasure trove of fine foods and deep rooted cooking traditions.

Discover, taste, and experience Greek Cretan food in Alana Restaurant: truly one of the joys you simply should not miss.
