Crete's Gastronomy and Local Products

The famous Cretan diet and Crete’s cuisine dates back to the late 60s. It is not simply food, but a whole philosophy and lifestyle. The food is not only tasty but also has plenty of health benefits. Did you ever wonder why Cretan people live so long? The secret is their healthy eating, combined with lots of regular exercise, Crete’s fresh air and the amazing ambiance.

Nothing is more characteristic of Crete than the hundreds of olive trees which greet you everywhere from close to the beach to the tops of the highest mountains. The olive tree can produce fruits even in rocky and dry fields and its main characteristic is its long life and productivity. Of course, one of the most important ingredients in Greek cooking is olive oil. As well as that central ingredient, spices and other herbs such as oregano, basil, mint, thyme and rosemary are used abundantly. Vegetables like eggplant and zucchini and legumes of all types are easily grown in Crete and all in great amount. This is why many Cretans produce their own variety of cheeses, fruits, oils and vegetables in their own farms.
